The 60-year sexagenary cycle is formed by pairing each of the 10 Heavenly Stems with each of the 12 Earthly Branches. Since the two numbers share no common factor other than 1 (except that they cycle through LCM=60 combinations), only 60 unique pairs form. Each pair also has a Na Yin 納音 sound element derived from classical Chinese music theory.
